Library Coursework

LTA 1303 | 01
Special Publications | Special Library Paper

This class had information important to an LTA. Not all libraries have the same processes or same information. However, there are things common amongst all of them: acquiring materials, weeding collections, and providing access to information. This was a unique experience. I didn’t realize how many different kinds and types of special libraries there were. Doing this paper, I learned that sometimes in organizing information you must be flexible. For this history library, they had to transition from Dewey Decimal to LCC. In addition, they had to find a way to organize the collections by owners. Therefore, they made it closed stacks but welcome people to come in and ask for help. Digitizing records is really a goal of a lot of special libraries. There are unique publications that they want to preserve and make it easier to access. This can include manuscripts, photos, and genealogy reports. I was surprised that not all items were especially rare or valuable, but still had good information.

Library Services for Children and
Young Adults | Program Planning Paper

This was enjoyable! I had a blast learning about different kinds of children’s and Young Adult literature. It helped going over their development. Some activities and stories work better for certain age groups than others. While I don’t think an LTA will be required to create and execute a library program for any age group, the experience is still valuable. It allowed practice for budgeting, following library protocols and policies, and being creative. An LTA may be asked to assist with a program. Completing this paper gives a better idea of which questions to ask, what to expect, and ways we could be more helpful.
